Patriotism and giving thanks to God for our great country are hallmarks of the month of July. How blessed we are to live in this great country of ours.
In the Old Testament book of Amos, we read of Amos’ sermon to the people of that time and place. He is exhorting the powerful and shady rich to stop taking unfair advantage of the everyday, powerless people of the community.
A passage from Amos was used by Martin Luther King Jr. in his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. He quoted Amos 5:24 saying, “Let justice roll down like mighty waters, and righteousness like an every flowing stream.” Let us remember that as the Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians 3, “we are all one in faith through Christ”.
I quote from a prayer written by Pete Hayes:
“O God, whose holiness is not limited to grand cathedrals or saintly persons, spectacular mountains or mountain-moving leaders; O God, whose holiness is often discovered in simple everyday places and simple everyday folks, plant your love in us where ever we go today. Grow us now, we pray, that we might flower with the beauty of your holiness. Through Jesus we pray. Amen.
May God’s blessings continue to be with you.
